How long does the swelling of a new stoma ostomy typically last?

The typical duration of swelling for a new stoma ostomy is generally around 1 to 2 weeks. This post-operative swelling is a common and expected response to the surgical procedure and the body's healing process. In the initial stage, the stoma may appear quite swollen, but this usually reduces significantly within the first couple of weeks.

While 3-5 weeks may also seem plausible for some individuals, the majority of swelling is resolved in the first couple of weeks as the tissue around the stoma heals. After the initial swelling subsides, the stoma typically stabilizes and any further changes in size become minimal.

The longer time frames of 6-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks are generally not representative of the typical timeline for swelling and healing, as most adjustments to a new stoma occur much earlier in the recovery process. Therefore, the expectation for swelling should align with the shorter time frame following surgery.
